Based on existing information, it seems likeliest he was attempting to access something within Olivia's files.

But the other possibility is that he did something to change his regret, and the lost memories are a consequence of that.

It is difficult to ascertain one way or another without investigation, and as he does not know me there is little cause for him to confide such things in me now.

It wasn't the second. Even if something compelled him to change it, he wouldn't have done it without speaking to you first.

He confessed a willingness to change his regret. That does not mean it was about me, if that is the case here.

However, the correlation between his saying he had considered it and him losing his memories of me is certainly coincidental, if nothing else.

[He'd meant that if McCoy knew the consequence would be losing his memory, no matter what the regret change he would have told him. He starts to clarify as much and then stops. Itachi didn't reach out for that and while the implication that McCoy cared might be soothing to another, it would push Itachi away here.]
